Strand am Rethymnon:

Lange Sandstrände

Wir bedauern, dass wir noch nicht diese Seite ins Deutsche übersetzt haben. Im Folgenden zeigen wir die englische Fassung.

If from Villa Talea you go along the National Road towards Rethymnon after having passed Panormos you will soon reach a part of the northern coastline which has one of the longest stretches of sandy beaches in all of Crete.

Geropótamos Beach

The first beach you'll come by is the Geropótamos beach beneath the Geropótamos Bridge just of the highway. It lies where the Geropótamos River flows into the sea approx. 20 km east of Rethymnon.
It is a sandy and pebbled beach, there's a taverna and you can rent sun beds.

Skaleta, Sfakaki and Stavromenos beaches

Long sandy beaches stretches along the coast east of Rethymnon

Another 5-10 kilometres down the coast you'll reach the Skaleta, Sfakaki and Stavromenos beaches. These are also sandy beaches mixed with pebbles. There are stretches where you can be on your own but also organised areas with beach bars, sun beds and parasols.

This part of the coast is where the endangered Careta Careta turtles hatch.
From the middle of May to the middle of September one should therefore avoid the beaches during nighttimes in order not to disturb the animals. (Read more about this in our section about the Cretan fauna).

The beaches at Platanes, Missiria and Koumbes

Between 2 and 4 kilometres east of Rethymnon you'll find these sandy blue flag beaches.
There are plenty of hotels, taverns, bars and shops in the area so you'll have no problem finding a place for lunch or to buy something to drink. Sun beds and umbrellas are available as well as different kinds of water sports.

The beaches at Rethymnon Town

The beach continues right into the middle of Rethymnon town. Even in the very centre of Rethymnon near the old Venetian Harbour you can find a clean, sandy beach.

It can be very crowded here during the high season but if you go to Platanias beach which is just a few minutes west of the harbour you should be able to find places with less people.
