Nana Mouskouri (1934-)

One of the most successful singers in the world

Nana Mouskouri (actually Ioanna Mouskhouri (Ιωάννα Μούσχουρη) is a Greek singer and politician. She is known above all from her hit 'White Rose of Athens'. Her musical versatility and linguistic talents has given her an outstanding international career and she has to date (2006) sold over 250 million records. After Madonna she is the most successful singer of all time.

She was born in Chania, Crete. She began her training at the Hellenic Conservatory in Athens where she studied classical voice, piano and harmony. In 1958 she released her first single in Greece, but later it has been followed by more than 1.550 titles.

Nana Mouskouri was involved in the opposition against the dictatorship of the colonels in Greece. After the end of military dictatorship, she performed for the first time after more than 20 years of exile in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens. Since 1993 she has been UNICEF Special Representative. 1994 to 1999 she was member of the European Parliament for the Christian Democrats of Greece.
