1898-1913

The Autonomous Years

During and after the Greek War of Independence, the Cretans rebelled several times against Ottoman rule, pursuing union with Greece. Following the intervention by the Great Powers (United Kingdom, the Austrian Empire, Prussia, France, Russia) a Cretan State was established in 1898. In 1908 the Cretan deputies declared union of Crete with Greece, but this was not recognized by Greece until 1912 and internationally until 1913.
