1913-1941

Unification with Greece

In 1908 the Cretans declared union of Crete with Greece. In 1913 this was internationally recognized. This first period of Crete being part of Greece had several dramatic events. Notably the Greco–Turkish War (1919–1922) which lead to a population exchange with the newly established state of Turkey in 1923 where many so called Cretan Turks were forced to leave Crete. And this period ended in another war. During the Second World War Crete was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941.
